A Dental Crown May Be More Effective at Treating a Large Cavity

Posted .

A cavity can develop when the bacteria that occurs naturally in your mouth attacks weak point in your tooth enamel, and becomes an increased risk if you don’t have good oral hygiene. A large dental cavity may be too much for a simple dental filling to repair. If there is little healthy tooth remaining, our dentist may need to treat the tooth with a dental crown.

A dental crown provided by Mountain Peak Dental will be created as a replica of the original tooth and can comprise of gold, porcelain, or base metal alloys. Dr. Jeff Davidson and Dr. Lynn Seamons may recommend a dental crown material based on the tooth’s appearance, location, and primary function in your smile.

Restoring a tooth with a dental crown typically requires two different visits to our office. During the first appointment, we will form the affected tooth into an abutment that contains the healthy core, including the dentin, pulp, and tooth root.

We then take a detailed impression of the area and surrounding teeth to a dental lab to have your new crown created. When the crown is ready, we can arrange a shorter follow-up appointment, in which we will cement the permanent dental crown atop the abutment.
